On 21 August 2025, an official handover ceremony was held at Hulhulé Island Hotel to mark the completion and transfer of Phase 1 of the Taxiway Charlie Rebuild Project at Velana International Airport.
The project, contracted to Beijing Urban Constructions Group (BUCG) on 16 October 2024, was completed 84 days ahead of schedule and officially handed over to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). During the ceremony, MACL’s Deputy Managing Director, Mujthaba Latheef, presented the Phase 1 project completion certificate to BUCG’s Project Director, Kang Guangbao.
The event was attended by MACL Chairperson Ayesha Nurain Janah, BUCG International’s Zhang Fenglin, members of the MACL Board of Directors, Director of the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority Fathimath Ramiza, Managing Director of Maldives National Air Traffic Service Ibrahim Thoha, and members of the MACL Executive Committee.
The completion of Phase 1 marks a significant milestone in MACL’s ongoing efforts to enhance airfield infrastructure at Velana International Airport, strengthening its capacity to meet growing aviation demands.
