One of the biggest challenges faced by travellers in the Maldives is the long wait times and lack of proper shelter while commuting between islands. This is especially difficult for first-time visitors unfamiliar with the tropical climate, as waiting under the sun for even 20 minutes can be uncomfortably hot, particularly for those used to cooler temperatures.
During peak travel seasons, large crowds gather at the Hulhumalé Ferry Terminal and in front of Barcelona Nasandhura Malé, waiting for their ferries or speedboats to their next destination. Whether heading to a nearby island like Maafushi or a more distant atoll such as Baa, travellers often struggle to find shaded spots, with some resorting to sitting on pavements while waiting for their departure.
To improve convenience and streamline transportation, the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced that the harbours at the Hulhumalé Ferry Terminal and Barcelona Nasandhura Malé will now be open to all registered speed ferry operators. This decision was taken by MTCC in a move to enhance accessibility and provide travelers with more options.
By allowing additional ferry operators to register and operate from these harbours, MTCC hopes to ease congestion, reduce wait times, and improve the overall travel experience for those commuting between Malé and the islands. This move is expected to make island connections more efficient, benefiting both locals and tourists alike. MTCC has opened up the opportunity for ferry operators to register to use these terminals by submitting their applications via email at [email protected] before March 10, 2025.
