On 26 July 2025, during a ceremony that marked a major milestone in the Maldives' aviation history and coincided with the country’s 60th Independence Day, Velana International Airport (VIA) officially inaugurated its long-awaited new terminal.
The terminal, a project that was first signed for development in 2016, represents a transformative leap for the country’s primary gateway. As part of the celebrations, Maldivian, the national airline, was given the honour of operating the first official flight to land at the new terminal. The inaugural flight arrived on 27 July 2025, marking a historic moment for both Maldivian and VIA.
To commemorate the occasion, Maldivian cabin crew dressed in traditional Maldivian attire and offered special treats to lucky passengers on board. Upon arrival, the aircraft received a traditional water salute, symbolizing the significance of the moment. Passengers disembarked using the brand-new passenger boarding bridge, a first-of-its-kind experience at VIA.
Inside the new terminal, passengers were warmly welcomed by airport staff and presented with roses and commemorative pin badges to mark their part in this historic event.
To recognize the milestone, Maldivian was awarded a commemorative plaque by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), the operator of VIA. The plaque was handed over in appreciation of the airline being the first to operate from the new facility.

The opening of the new terminal is expected to significantly enhance passenger experience, allowing for more efficient operations, expanded capacity, and a more modern gateway that reflects the Maldives’ growing prominence in global travel.
