In a move that reflects the strengthening bilateral ties between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, the Maldives has officially announced that Sri Lankan citizens will now be eligible for a 90-day free on-arrival visa when visiting the Maldives. The new visa policy came into effect on 29 July 2025.
The announcement was made by Maldives Immigration following high-level discussions between President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and President Anura Dissanayake of Sri Lanka, who recently undertook a state visit to the Maldives. This reciprocal arrangement aligns with Sri Lanka’s earlier decision to grant Maldivian citizens a 90-day on-arrival visa starting from January 2025.
The visa waiver extension is expected to enhance travel, trade, and people-to-people exchanges between the two South Asian neighbours, reinforcing their shared commitment to regional cooperation and mutual prosperity.
The Maldives and Sri Lanka have traditionally enjoyed strong ties, and this latest visa facilitation is seen as a significant step toward making cross-border travel more seamless and accessible for citizens of both nations.
