On 05 December 2025, the Maldives Airports Company Ltd. (MACL) announced the continued expansin of the operations at the airports new terminal with Etihad airways commencing its operations at Terminal 1.

With this shift, Etihad airways has become the 29th airline operating at Terminal 1 of Velana International Airport (VIA).
