Chinese tourists return strong

With a staggering 153,898 Chinese visitors arriving in the Maldives so far this year, China has surged from the 27th spot to secure the second position in visitor arrivals within just nine months.

In January 2023, the Maldives celebrated the long-awaited return of Chinese tourists after a painstaking three-year hiatus caused by stringent COVID-19 restrictions. The Maldives had consistently ranked among the top destinations for Chinese travellers prior to the pandemic. However, the global health crisis brought all travel to a standstill.

Anticipation ran high for the return of Chinese tourists to their beloved Maldivian getaway. Surprisingly, less than a year after the first flight from China touched down in the Maldives, Chinese visitors quickly reclaimed the number two spot for the highest number of arrivals in the country. This impressive resurgence marks a remarkable turnaround.

Previously, Russia had led the pack in terms of visitors to the Maldives, with India closely following. However, with a staggering 153,898 Chinese visitors arriving in the Maldives so far this year, China has surged from the 27th spot to secure the second position in visitor arrivals within just nine months.

As of now, India continues to hold the third position in this ranking, while the United Kingdom trails closely behind.
