Austrian Airlines has started direct flights to the Maldives as of 18 October, 2022. Flying from Vienna International Airport directly to Velana International Airport, these direct flights are targeted especially for the winter season. With the airline expected to fly to the Maldives three times a week, the introduction of this airline adds another exciting direct flight to the Maldives.

Since the borders closed due to COVID-19, several airlines had stopped direct flights into several countries, including the Maldives. However, recently several airlines such as FitsAir and Bangkok Airways have started hosting direct flights to the Maldives.

While the Maldives is a well known tourist destination, the addition of Austrian Airlines always comes at the peak tourist arrival season in the Maldives - December. With tourists who want to experience the beauty of the Maldivian islands while also trying to get away from the cold winter season -  choosing the Maldives as one of their first picks when it comes to tourist destinations - Austrian Airline has introduced direct flights between both countries to make the visit more accessible to tourists.

The introduction of this direct route to the Maldives also falls during Christmas, making it an exciting addition to the bucket list for those who want to spend Christmas on a beach vacation rather than in the falling snow.

With Austrian Airlines conducting direct flights with the Boeing 777-200’s, the number of tourist arrivals from the country is expected to increase even further. As of September 2022, the tourist arrivals from Austria to the Maldives stands at 17,000.
