The housing crisis in the Maldives is no secret to anyone who has gone apartment hunting in the Greater Male’ Area. With prices ranging from the total pay-cheque of an average citizen to double the salary for nicer apartments with better ventilation and views, the problem in the city area goes beyond the surface-level comprehension that many might have of it.

One of the main demographics who face the depths of the housing crisis, surprisingly enough, are the citizens of Male’ City. While it might make sense for people born and raised in a place to have a home to call their own, for a large number of residents of Male’ City and people who have lived in the city almost their whole lives, rented homes remain to be the reality as they have no place to call their own.

And while there have been several housing projects to resolve the increasing housing issue in the Maldives, the current administration launched a housing scheme called the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme in order to tackle the specific issue of housing residents of Male’, so they can finally have a place to call their home.

With the housing scheme first opening up for applications on June 26, 2023, the housing scheme, even from the very start, garnered huge support as a total number of 20,697 people applied for the scheme. The Gedhoruveriya scheme, which promised homes for Male’ residents, was to be developed into 32 towers which would consist of 18 floors on each tower. These apartments were to be developed into two different categories with 1200 two-bedroom apartments and 2,800 three-bedroom apartments.

As the current administration approaches its final month, the Government has unveiled the roster of beneficiaries for the Gedhoruveriya scheme. This announcement comes with the assurance that housing will be allocated to eligible applicants conforming to the established criteria. Alongside the release of the recipients' list, the Housing Ministry of the Maldives has outlined its intent to meticulously review all applications. This meticulous scrutiny is aimed at guaranteeing the accuracy and validity of the list before granting final approval to recipients under the scheme.
