In line with previous administrations' efforts, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih launched an ambitious housing initiative to address the pressing need for adequate housing in Male’ City. The 'Gedhoruveriya' housing scheme is designed to provide homes for residents who currently lack proper accommodation in the capital. Complementing this, the 'Binveriya' scheme aims to distribute land plots to those in need, further alleviating the housing crisis.

Launched in 2023, the Gedhoruveriya project aims to construct 4,000 housing units. The project, entrusted to the Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC), envisions 32 towering structures, each with 18 floors. The planned accommodations include 1,200 two-bedroom apartments and 2,800 three-bedroom apartments, offering a range of options to meet the diverse needs of Male’ City residents.

As with any large-scale development, the Gedhoruveriya scheme has encountered challenges. FDC announced the need for additional funding, estimating that MVR 454.4 million will be required to complete the project due to some additions to the project which were not included initially. Despite these financial hurdles, the project is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed by mid-2025 if construction continues at its current pace.

In addition to the swift construction, efforts are also being made to ensure transparency and fairness in the allocation of these homes. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is actively reviewing the awarding process to guarantee that deserving candidates are the rightful recipients of the new apartments.

The Gedhoruveriya housing scheme represents a significant step towards resolving Male’ City's housing shortage and providing much-needed homes to its residents. With continued support and oversight, this project has the potential to make a lasting impact on the community, offering a more stable and comfortable living environment for many.
