In a promising development for the residents of Dhiggaru Island, at the start of March 2024, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu unveiled plans to kickstart the construction of seventy-five housing units slated to commence in the island this year. The announcement came during a meeting with the island's residents, where the President outlined a comprehensive vision for the island's development.

The housing project is a large part of the Governments aim to develop the infrastructure of Dhiggaru Island, as the President emphasized the integral role of basic amenities in fostering a thriving community. Alongside the housing project, plans are underway to enhance the island's infrastructure, including harbor development and initiatives to ensure access to essential services such as water and sanitation.

And now, marketing the start of the housing project, the Government has officially awarded the Dhiggaru housing project to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) under a "design and build" basis. This means that MTCC will be responsible for both designing as well as constructing the housing project, allowing one company to handle everything from coming up with the plans to building the final housing project in Dhiggaru.

The funding for this housing project was allocated from the government's Public Sector Investment Program (PSIP) budget for the year 2024, which entails the construction of 1000-square-foot housing units, each comprising three bedrooms, three toilets, a sitting room, kitchen, laundry, and storage room.

With a deadline of 420 days for completion, MTCC is tasked with delivering high-quality housing units equipped with essential facilities to ensure residents' safety and comfort. In addition to the housing units, the project will include the development of a park and dedicated parking zone, complemented by lighting infrastructure as well.

The announcement of the housing project marks a significant step towards fulfilling the government's commitment to improving living standards and fostering sustainable development in Dhiggaru Island.
