Marking its strong operational performance in 2026, Velana International Airport (VIA) also highlighted significant cargo growth during the first quarter of the year.

According to the airport, a total of 24,782 tonnes of cargo were handled in Malé during the quarter, comprising 18,908 tonnes of inbound cargo and 5,873 tonnes of outbound cargo.

Transhipment volumes also recorded notable growth, reaching 4,277 tonnes — a 14 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Of this total, 322 tonnes were handled through sea-to-air transhipment, while the majority, 3,955 tonnes, were processed via air-to-air transhipment.

In addition, Velana Airport recorded 264 freight movements during the quarter, with total freight throughput reaching 2,168 tonnes.

These figures further underscore VIA’s expanding role not only as the Maldives’ main passenger hub, but also as a growing regional centre for cargo and logistics operations.
