As the holy month of Ramadan draws near, many citizens in the Maldives are grappling with concerns about the inevitable surge in household expenses. While Ramadan is eagerly anticipated by Muslims for its spiritual significance and opportunities for familial bonding, the looming prospect of inflated bills casts a shadow over the anticipation.

Year after year, Maldivian households face substantial increases in utility bills during Ramadan. The heightened use of electricity for meal preparation during Iftar, coupled with increased water consumption for various purposes, contributes to this financial strain. However, amidst these worries, there's a glimmer of relief on the horizon.

In a significant move, the President of the Maldives has announced measures to alleviate the burden on citizens during Ramadan. The government has decided to cap electricity and water bills at the regular rates applicable in other months. This decision brings solace to many who were anxious about grappling with soaring bills during the holy month. Additionally, the President has directed the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) to waive the MVR 30 charge imposed on islands where their services are provided. In addition to alleviating these burdens from households, the government has also taken measures to reduce the financial strains on mosques this Ramadan. To do this, the Government has dedicated to charging councils domestic rates rather than the Government rate for electricity bills that are incurred by the mosques.

Furthermore, recognizing the economic strain caused by increased expenses during Ramadan, the government is extending a helping hand to its citizens. Each household will receive a generous gift of 10 kilograms of rice and flour. These staple ingredients witness heightened consumption during Ramadan as special dishes are prepared, thereby alleviating a significant financial burden for families.

By capping utility bills, providing essential food items, and easing financial burdens on councils and mosques, the government is fostering an environment where the true spirit of Ramadan can flourish, fostering unity, generosity, and compassion within the Maldivian community.
