On 11th April 2023, an agreement was signed between the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure and the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) for the development of the harbour of Thinadhoo in Vaavu Atoll.

This MVR 40.57 million project was signed with an understanding of being completed within one year in order to ease the transportation from and into the island. Under this project, the V. Thinadhoo harbour will be seeing major changes upon completion as MTCC has been contracted to dredge 12,800 cubic meters in order to develop a new harbour basin, dredge 860 cubic meters of the canal, develop 77 meters of outer drainage, build a 10-metre-long, 9 metre-wide ramp as well as a 16-metre-long 2 metre-wide concrete bridge.

Though the Maldives has developed its transportation sector to new heights, especially in the past few years, several local islands still depend on sea transportation as a form of economic development. When it comes to V. Thinadhoo, the harbour was in need of development and upgrading as it would facilitate more space for workers to carry out their tasks without the harbour looking too congested.

However, this is not the only benefit the people will get with this development. V. Thinadhoo is also one of the most popular islands in the Atoll with several guest houses, and this new harbour development will bring ease of transportation which might lead to the island seeing an influx in their tourism sector as well.

As per latest Census 2022, total population of Vaavu Thinadhoo is 259, out of which Maldivian population is only 75, while expatriate population is 184.
