In a press statement published on 05 August 2025, the Maldives' Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the Sri Lankan government has decided to issue medical and spousal visas for Maldivians married to Sri Lankan citizens for one year.

Out of these, a good number of Maldivian citizens have also made Sri Lanka their home away from home, often settling down in the country. The Foreign Ministry in its press statement noted that this decision by the Sri Lankan Government will address the visa challenges that were faced by Maldivians in the past.

With this, the Foreign Ministry has advised visa applicants to stay observant throughout their appliaction process to ensure no errors are made.

Visa applicants are advised to pay particular attention to completing the required documentation with their application, specifically, the required documentation for security clearance. The Government of Sri Lanka has advised the applicant to be vigilant if any issues are identified in the security clearance record of the visa applicant, as it may result in negative consequences such as revocation of the visa,
