According to the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET), the Maldives is currently experiencing active southwest monsoon conditions. In a press release published on the official platforms of the MET office, it has been reported that over the next five days, residents and visitors, particularly seafarers, are advised to take extra precautions due to strong winds, squally showers, and the possibility of rough seas.

The weather forecast for the upcoming days indicates average wind speeds of 15 to 25 miles per hour in the northern and central regions of the Maldives. In the southern part of the country, winds are expected to reach 13 to 23 miles per hour. However, gusts of wind in all regions could be as high as 45 to 55 miles per hour during this period.

The MET office has also warned that heavy, squally showers and thunderstorms will likely affect many parts of the country. These weather patterns could cause wave surges, especially during high tide, leading to potentially hazardous conditions at sea. Although the Maldives has been experiencing some unpredictable weather with torrential rain, the MET office publishes the forecast for the coming days to warn citizens who may need to prepare for potential flooding, rough seas, and other weather-related disruptions to their daily activities and travel plans.

Given the expected weather conditions, the MET office is urging everyone, especially seafarers, to exercise caution. High winds and rough seas can make navigation dangerous, and those planning sea voyages should ensure they stay updated on the latest weather reports. Mariners are encouraged to consult weather updates regularly before setting out to avoid any untoward incidents.

The southwest monsoon is a common seasonal occurrence in the Maldives, typically bringing about strong winds and rain. However, the conditions predicted over the next few days appear more intense, so it's important to take necessary precautions. Residents in coastal areas should remain vigilant for potential flooding, and travellers should anticipate possible disruptions in sea transport.
