The Government has officially started the work towards re-developing and modernizing run-down roads in both Male’ City and Vilimale’. Issues surrounding run-down roads are often talked about when it comes to the Greater Male’ Area as pot-holes and other issues tend to raise concerns, especially during monsoon season. With the high traffic, especially in bad weather conditions, dilapidated roads can cause issues for both pedestrians as well as drivers.
As this issue continues to cause hurdles to everyday people, it has become one of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s promises to bring a resolution to the issue as he took on the administration in 2023. Kickstarting the project to resolve these issues in Villimale’ and Male’ City, the Government announced that the road development project has started in an official capacity with the aid of the Chinese Government as of 23rd November 2024. While the development works started on 23rd November, work towards starting the development project started earlier in the month.
This phase which was carried out from the 5th to 21st of November 2024 entailed hosting meetings with the main stakeholders of the project which included the technical team that was appointed by the Chinese Government. The technical team carried out their assessments during this time period and conducted a feasibility study of the roads in order to create a viable plan for the project.
With this phase now being completed, according to the Ministry of Construction, the next stage is going to be the design phase, which is expected to outline detailed plans for the modernization and redevelopment of the roads. This phase will include finalizing road layouts, drainage systems, and measures to improve pedestrian safety.
