The holy month of Ramadan began with heavy rainfall in the Maldives, turning what is often considered a blessing into a challenge for many. While rain is welcomed during fasting, the 1st of March 2025 set a new record for the highest 24-hour rainfall ever recorded in the country.
Dhiffushi registered an unprecedented 296.1mm of rainfall within a single day, surpassing the previous record held by HA. Kelaa, which recorded 231.5mm on August 12, 2024. Other islands also experienced intense rainfall, with Hulhumalé receiving 185.2mm and F. Nilandhoo recording 178.2mm.
The extreme weather caused significant disruptions in Malé City, where heavy flooding damaged homes and businesses. The continuous downpour extended into the next day, prompting the government to declare March 2nd, 2025, a public holiday to allow for recovery efforts.
As the Maldives grapples with increasingly unpredictable weather patterns, these record-breaking rains serve as a reminder of the challenges posed by climate change and the need for improved infrastructure to mitigate the impact of extreme weather events.
