President witnesses exchange of Key MoU and Treaty between the Maldives and Sri Lanka

The official talks concluded with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation across a wide range of areas, including capacity building and education, climate action, fisheries and agriculture, and food security, as well as maritime safety, air connectivity, youth development, and sports.

During an official visit to the Maldives, the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, His Excellency Anura Kumara Disanayaka and the President of the Republic of Maldives, His Excellency Dr Mohamed Muizzu, held official talks at the President’s Office.

During the talks, President Dr Muizzu highlighted the close diplomatic ties between the two neighbouring countries, which have spanned six decades. He also emphasised the strong people-to-people ties and acknowledged the valuable contribution of the Sri Lankan workforce to the Maldives’ development.

The official talks concluded with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation across a wide range of areas, including capacity building and education, climate action, fisheries and agriculture, and food security, as well as maritime safety, air connectivity, youth development, and sports.

Following this, President Dr Muizzu and President Disanayaka witnessed the exchange of a key Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and a treaty between the Republic of Maldives and the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.

The Memorandum of Understanding on Diplomatic Training and the Exchange of Information and Documents was signed between the Foreign Service Institute of Maldives (FOSIM), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, and the Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute (BIDTI) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. The MoU outlines cooperation in diplomatic training, knowledge-sharing, and the exchange of institutional resources and documentation.

A Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters was also signed between the Republic of Maldives and the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka during the event. This treaty, previously endorsed by the Cabinet, aims to strengthen legal cooperation between the two countries by facilitating assistance in criminal investigations, prosecutions, and the exchange of evidence and information.
