President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is currently undertaking an official visit to the United Kingdom to participate in a series of high-level meetings and engagements aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation between the Maldives and the UK. The visit comes as both nations mark 60 years of diplomatic relations, first established on 26 July 1965.
Accompanied by a senior delegation, President Muizzu’s visit includes meetings focused on key areas of mutual interest, including governance, climate and environmental issues, trade, investment, and education. The visit reflects the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening its long-standing partnership with the UK, built on shared values, mutual respect, and robust people-to-people connections.
On 16 July 2025, The Rt Hon Sir Lindsay Hoyle MP, Speaker of the House of Commons, paid a courtesy call on President Muizzu at the Speaker’s House in the Palace of Westminster. The meeting underscored the enduring partnership between the two countries, with discussions centred on advancing shared priorities such as environmental stewardship, sustainable tourism, fisheries, and the promotion of democratic governance.
Later the same day, President Muizzu engaged in a high-level session with the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on the Maldives at the House of Lords. The session, chaired by MP Yasmin Qureshi, Co-Chair of APPG Maldives, highlighted the international community’s responsibility to support Small Island Developing States (SIDS) through financial assistance, technical expertise, and sustained commitment. President Muizzu reiterated the Maldives’ dedication to enhancing its relationship with the UK and expressed gratitude for continued support in areas such as justice reform, democratic consolidation, climate adaptation, defence cooperation, and capacity building. Discussions also explored further collaboration in educational and cultural exchanges.
Additionally, the Rt Hon David Lammy MP, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, also paid a courtesy call on President Muizzu. Their discussions focused on expanding cooperation in key sectors, including fisheries, climate change adaptation, renewable energy development, and the promotion of education and scholarship opportunities.
