On 15 October 2025, during his ongoing visit to the inhabited islands of Noth Miladhunmadulu Atoll, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu officially inaugurated the ice plan in Funadhoo. During the inaugurated ceremony, President Dr Muizzu addressed the Funadhoo residents, highlighting that this was the first ice plant to be established under the Government’s efforts to strengthen the fisheries sector, noting that the 30-tonne facility will bring significant benefits to the local community.

In addition to this inauguration, several key projects, aligned with President Dr Muizzu’s presidential pledges, were formalised and launched during the visit. These include the establishment of a Maldivian National University campus, the construction of a sports complex, harbour upgrades, a new building for Funadhoo Hospital, the handover of the waste management operations to WAMCO, and the establishment of an Islamic centre.

President Dr Muizzu also outlined plans for the island’s infrastructure and services. He confirmed that the development of Funadhoo Airport will be carried out in two phases, with the first phase – the installation of lights – scheduled for completion this year. He further confirmed that a 300-unit housing project will commence following the completion of the land reclamation project, set to begin tomorrow.

Additionally, speech therapy services will be introduced on the island this year, and an administrative office building will be developed in the school by the end of the year. The President also highlighted ongoing initiatives to establish a Junior College, strengthen coastal protection, and improve water and electricity services for the island’s residents.

Emphasising Funadhoo as a model of decentralisation and population consolidation, President Dr Muizzu reaffirmed that the Administration’s development projects would be implemented with these principles in mind.
