The SCO is a regional body focused on political, economic, and security matters across Eurasia. It was formed in 2001 by six nations: China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. As the world's largest regional organisation in terms of geographic scope and population, SCO has now expanded to 10 member states, with several more engaged as observers or dialogue partners. The Maldives is a dialogue partner of SCO.

Up on arrival for his official visit, President Dr Muizzu met with His Excellency Xi Jinping, President of the People's Republic of China, this morning at the Tianjin Yingbin Hotel on 31 August 2025.

Discussions during the meeting focused on key areas of cooperation, including economic development, trade and investment, security collaboration, and fostering people-to-people connections. President Xi Jinping reaffirmed China’s commitment to providing full support to the Maldives in achieving its national development goals and emphasised the importance of continuing the result-oriented partnership. Both leaders agreed to further elevate China-Maldives relations under the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership (2024–2028).

The meeting concluded with both Presidents reaffirming their shared commitment to deepening cooperation and advancing mutual interests.
