President announces timeline for Vilufushi airport and hospital development projects

In addition to the development of the airport on the island, President Dr Muizzu also noted that the island will see the development of a new hospital on the island, which is set to become operational within 18 months.

During his recent visit to Thaa Atoll, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu highlighted upcoming key developments for the island of Vilufushi. Speaking to the residents of the island, the President noted that the ongoing development of the Vilufushi Airport will be completed within 30 months, making connectivity better in Thaa Atoll.

The project to construct the airport at Vilufushi was awarded to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). Under the agreement, which was signed between MTCC and the Construction Ministry, upon completion, the airport will have a 1,800-metre runway, a passenger terminal, a fire building and an administrative building, as well as an airfield lighting system. The cost of the Vilufushi airport project is MVR277 million. 

In addition to the development of the airport on the island, President Dr Muizzu also noted that the island will see the development of a new hospital on the island, which is set to become operational within 18 months. Giving further details, the President's Office noted that the construction of the Vilufushi Hospital is set to commence, with the Government pledging to deliver a state-of-the-art facility within a year and a half.

Upon the completion of these two major projects, the island will have access to better healthcare as well as connectivity. 

Additionally, during his visit, President Dr Muizzu also addressed housing concerns in the island noting that water, electricity, and sewerage systems will be installed in all completed housing units by the end of the year. He also announced plans for an additional 100 housing units next year, with the option for construction on individual residents’ plots.

Further developments for the island also includes improvements in the educational sector as President Dr Muizzu noted that the construction of a Maldives National University (MNU) campus is also set to be included in the coming year's budget. Furthermore, the island's harbour expansion as well as upgrades to the local mosque into an Islamic Centre was also noted by the President.
