The Maldives' Pension Office has conducted an information session for sole proprietors and self-employed individuals in collaboration with Business Centre Corporation, aimed at strengthening financial literacy, supporting sustainable business management, and raising awareness of retirement planning.
Titled “Understanding Financial Basics and the Maldives Retirement Pension Scheme” the session covered fundamental concepts relevant to managing a business, including the importance of separating personal and business finances, formalising business operations, and maintaining proper financial records.
Participants were introduced to key accounting concepts and practices, including the double-entry system and the preparation and understanding of financial statements such as balance sheets, income statements and cash flow statements. The session also introduced participants to modern accounting software and digital tools that can support effective day-to-day financial management.
The session also provided information on the Maldives Retirement Pension Scheme (MRPS) and how sole proprietors can voluntarily participate in the scheme and save towards their retirement. Participants were briefed on the importance of preparing for retirement and building their own retirement savings to support greater financial independence and security in later life.
Through the session, Pension Office aimed to equip sole proprietors with practical financial knowledge to support the sustainable management and growth of their businesses, while encouraging them to plan and save for their retirement.
The session forms part of Pension Office’s ongoing efforts to promote financial literacy among business owners, raise awareness of the Maldives Pension System, and increase MRPS coverage among sole proprietors.
