Although the Maldivian Police Service along with other corporations have been putting in extra effort to warn the public of scam calls and messages, it appears that scammers have taken things up a notch in Maldives. So far, there have been attempts to scam the public, pretending to represent corporations such as the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) as well as the Bank of Maldives (BML). Following each of the mass scam calling attempts, the police alongside these corporations have worked towards making the public more aware of phishing links as well as other tactics that were being utilised by scam callers so far.
In their latest tactic, Maldives Immigration has warned that scam callers have started targeting people via WhatsApp in the name of the immigration office. The scam callers have been making these calls, claiming to be from the immigration office - wearing uniforms that look similar to the Maldives immigration while wearing face masks to hide their identity.
Unlike prior attacks, the Immigration Office has also noted that scam callers are utilising a phone number from Pakistan, +92348107783. During these calls, the scammer’s main target is getting the identity card details and bank card details of victims. Additionally, the Maldives Immigration office has also noted that these scammers are aiming to capture face IDs through video calls and advised citizens to be wary of such calls.
