On 08 September 2025, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially designated Maafaru lagoon as part of Feridhoo, both located in North Ari Atoll.

This designation fulfils the President’s pledge to provide a sustainable means of income generation for Feridhoo’s future development, ensuring the island has the necessary resources to support economic growth.

The change was formalised through Presidential Decree No. 22/2025, enacted under the Decentralisation Act (Act No. 07/2010), by exercising the powers vested in the President under Section 134(a) of the Act.

Following the enactment of this Decree, the appendix of Presidential Decree No. 2/2025 on the determination of inhabited islands in the Maldives has been updated to include Maafaru lagoon as part of Feridhoo in North Ari Atoll and has been published in the Government Gazette.
