During the first official visit to Malaysia, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu inaugurated ID card and e-Passport services as well as the Maldivian Students Association-Malaysia in the country. This was done during a meeting that was hosted with the Maldivian community living in Malaysia on 28 April 2025.
The Government announced that the services will be available for all Maldivians living in Malaysia, starting 28 April 2025 from the High Commission of the Maldives in Malaysia. Following the inauguration of these services by President Muizzu, the Minister of Homeland, Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, handed over the first ever print of the Maldivian e-passport and ID card.
In order to inaugurate the Maldivian Students Association-Malaysia, the Minister of Higher Education, Dr Ali Haidar, handed over the first certificate — highlighting the establishment of the association. The association, which will create a closer community within the Maldivians residing in the Maldives, has been established with full Government support. President Muizzu, during the inauguration ceremony, revealed that a USD3,000 equivalent will be given to the association in Malaysian Ringgits from 2026 onwards.
With the establishment of these new services, the Maldivian community in Malaysia — including the hundreds of students who move to the country for access to quality higher education, will find it significantly easier to access essential government documents without needing to travel back to the Maldives. The availability of ID cards and e-passport services directly through the High Commission will streamline administrative processes, enhance convenience, and ensure better support for Maldivians living abroad.
