HDC’s ‘The Rasmale’ Eco City Project: building a sustainable, inclusive future

During the landmark launching event which was attended by Government officials, community leaders and various stakeholders, HDC presented their vision for sustainable modern living, which included various plans for the first eco-city in the Maldives with various solutions that will play a key role in addressing the diverse needs of the developing nations in order to foster a community that has access to quality living.

The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has unveiled its plans for Rasmale’ with ‘The Rasmale’: The Eco City’ project. This project is set to be one of the biggest initiatives that is going to be undertaken by HDC in a move to redefine living in the Maldives and transform man-made islands in the Maldives through visions and innovations. The full-scale project unveiling which was done on 12th November 2024 showcased HDC’s plans for seamlessly blending luxury, eco-conscious designs and community-centric amenities, which were commitments made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. Some of the focal points that the project aimed to address included the housing crisis as well as fostering inclusive and vibrant communities. 

During the landmark launching event which was attended by Government officials, community leaders and various stakeholders, HDC presented their vision for sustainable modern living. This included various plans for the first eco-city in the Maldives with various solutions that will play a key role in addressing the diverse needs of the developing nations in order to foster a community that has access to quality living. The project included various plans such as:

  • Farukolhufhsi Gated Community: Elevating Luxury Living

The plan that HDC unveiled for the Farukolhufushi area is to create a Gated Community in Hulhumale’ which will offer a range of upscale living options. Travelers and visitors will have access to residents with resort-like amenities, including an indoor sports complex, lap pool, clubhouse, and a 5-story luxury hotel for guests and visitors.

  • Row Houses and Prefab Homes: Modern, Inclusive Living

HDC also announced its plans to introduce a Row House initiative which will offer families a unique living experience with modern amenities such as an exclusive clubhouse, and wellness facilities. 

While row houses will provide a luxurious option, the innovative Prefab Homes project will offer a cost-efficient alternative to convenient housing. The Prefab Homes will offer customizable homes which ensure safe, modern, and comfortable living spaces with minimal turnaround time and costs. 

  • Social Housing Project: Affordable Living

In a move to address the Maldives’ housing crisis, two new social housing projects are also set to be introduced. One featuring 1,700 social housing units and another providing over 400 social housing units. 

  • Innovative Parking Solutions: Smart, Sustainable Infrastructure

Addressing yet another challenge in the Maldives, HDC also announced its plans to introduce 15 multi-level parking buildings in Hulhumale’. This will not only ease traffic congestion in the city, but it will also reduce parking shortages and streamline vehicle registration in the Greater Male’ Region. This initiative, led by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu aims to create a seamless parking experience with over 400 parking spaces and advanced smart parking solutions for short and long-term needs.

  • Isle Adventure Park: A Thrilling New Venture

In order to create a vibrant, multi-faced community, HDC also unveiled its plans for Isle Adventure Park which will become a dynamic hub for excitement and adventure. The park will feature exciting adventures such as racing tracks and drift tracks to go-karts and a water theme park including splash pads and wave pools making it an ideal getaway for thrill seekers.

  • Nooveli: A Premier Destination for Elevated Living

HDC also unveiled the Nooveli Island Retreat project which will be based in the lagoon of Galufalhu. This destination, set just a short trip from Male’ and Hulhumale’ is designed as an exclusive escape which will introduce luxurious homes, sunrise and sunset restaurants as well as a range of recreational activities. 

Additionally, the Nooveli Island will also include plans to support local businesses through a Commercial Plaza which will produce ample opportunities for local businesses. Moreover, the space will also include a convention centre, exhibition halls, and a banquet hall which can be used for various types of gatherings.

  • History Center: Historical Legacy of Maldives

The vision, of course, cannot be completed without recognising the history and culture of the Maldives. With this, HDC also unveiled the History Center which will feature exhibits, artifacts, and an aquarium. 

  • Kinaaraa : Destination Island

HDC is also reimagining the picnic island, naming the project Kinaaraa in a move to enhance the experiences in order to resonate more with cultural and commercial values.  The island offers three different unique experiences which include: 

Integrated Tourism Island – Dedicated to private guest houses, each with direct beach access and stunning views, this island combines privacy and luxury with a wellness and spa experience. Floating restaurants and cafes bring a unique dining experience, while water sports like kayaking, snorkelling, and paddleboarding offer an exhilarating adventure right by the shoreline. Dedicated to supporting the staff and service providers who make Kinaaria exceptional, this island features a Team Retreat for docking facilities, recreation, and well-designed accommodations that prioritize comfort and well-being, ensuring the best service and experience for all visitors. 

Entertainment Island – HDC is redefining recreation in the Maldives by introducing waterslides, beachside cinemas, paintball arenas, and rock climbing, transforming the area into a vibrant destination for both tourists and locals. With premier facilities and entertainment options, this island not only attracts visitors but also supports local businesses and job growth. It creates significant opportunities for collaboration among SMEs, bringing people together in a vibrant community. 

Camping Island – A first-of-its-kind, the Camping Island in the Maldives offers the thrill of outdoor adventure with activities like camping, bonfires, trails, and educational programs. Designed for scouts, youth groups, and families, Camping Island promotes environmental connection and skill development, inspiring future generations to lead with resilience and confidence. 

  • SME Building: Nurturing Innovation

The plans for the SME Building represent President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision for empowering local businesses and nurturing entrepreneurship. This innovative space is designed to support small and medium enterprises, offering shared resources and a collaborative environment, fostering creativity and connection among entrepreneurs. 

  • A Smart Warehouse Complex: Future of Logistics

In a move to bring warehousing solutions to the Maldives, HDC also introduced plans for a state-of-the-art Smart Warehouse Complex, poised to revolutionize the way businesses store, manage and distribute their goods across the nation. Powered by IoT, this innovative solution will cater to a diverse range of needs, ensuring that every aspect of logistics is efficient and streamlined. 

  • HDC Building:  Modern Office for Innovation and Growth

HDC also unveiled their new office building, which will not only serve as a workspace for HDC employees but also integrate commercial spaces and public areas to elevate the experience for both staff and visitors.  

  • Knowledge Park: Building Minds, Shaping Futures

Addressing the rising demand for educational institutions in Greater Male, Knowledge Park is poised to transform the learning experience for students. Featuring a thoughtfully crafted complex that will house a variety of institutions, complete with a Management Office, Tutorial Rooms, Lecture Halls, Staff Room, Meeting Room, and Laboratories, all designed to nurture diverse learning experiences. 

The Knowledge Park offers modern student hostels, where comfort meets functionality, creating a welcoming sanctuary for students. This modern, comfortable accommodation aims to enrich the student’s experience, providing a supportive atmosphere that promotes both study and social activities.
