In a move aimed at easing the financial burden on Maldivians seeking medical treatment abroad, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that, starting 1 August 2025, patients under the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) will be eligible to access up to USD2000 through local banks, in the same manner as patients traveling under the state-run Aasandha health insurance scheme.

The President made the announcement via X (formerly known as Tiwtter), stating that instructions had already been issued to the relevant authorities to facilitate the change.

In addition to this measure, the President also confirmed efforts to improve access to foreign currency for individuals who fund their own overseas medical trips. Under the revised arrangement, those travelling abroad for self-funded medical treatment will be able to obtain up to USD1,000 from banks. This is double the current amount of USD500 that such individuals are allowed to purchase at the official exchange rate.

While specific details on the mechanism for disbursing the dollars have yet to be publicly released, the President indicated that relevant institutions have been instructed to ensure smooth and timely implementation.
