The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Iruthisham Adam, attended the opening ceremony of the 30th Session of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) held in Male’, Maldives.
In her remarks, Minister Iruthisham highlighted the significant role played by the Maldives in advancing sustainable fisheries management. Emphasising the importance of safeguarding the Indian Ocean, she called for collective action to address the growing challenges facing the region.
The Minister further underscored that effective ocean governance must reflect the realities and differentiated capacities of countries, while ensuring that approaches are responsive to the specific needs of individual states, including the SIDS. She noted that technology transfer, adequate financing, and capacity-building initiatives are vital to ensure that SIDS are meaningfully represented in the global fisheries management.
Highlighting the importance of alignment between global and regional frameworks in achieving shared objectives, Minister Iruthisham reaffirmed Maldives’ commitment for strengthened cooperation in advancing sustainable fisheries management.
The 30th Session of the IOTC is being hosted by the Maldives from 11 to 15 May 2026. Since joining the IOTC in 2011, Maldives has been playing an active role in the organization, particularly to promote the interests of SIDS in sustainable fisheries.
