Development of Islamic Centre in Addu City

On March 24, 2023, an agreement was signed between the Islamic Ministry and Fedo Private Limited for the development of one of the largest Islamic centres in the Maldives.

According to the President’s Office, the project, which is to be carried out in Addu City, is to accommodate a prayer space for 1,500 people along with a 450-people-capacity multi-purpose hall as well as four classrooms, two seminar halls, an administrative office space along with an Islamic library and a pantry. 

This contract of MVR 55.5 million was signed between the two parties on Friday, with a duration of 15 months for the completion of the whole project. 

This is the first project of this scope by the Islamic Ministry outside of Male’ City, and after a long wait by the residents of Addu City, it appears that within the next 15 months, one of the biggest Islamic Centres will be located in the City.

At present, the biggest and most well-known Islamic Centre is located in the capital City of Male’, ‘Masjid Al-Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al-Azam’. This masjid / Islamic Centre is well-known as it is not only located in the centre of Male’ City, but Friday prayers in this masjid is also commonly broadcasted live every Friday. 

Prior to the signing ceremony, Vice-President Faisal Naseem along with the Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Ahmed Zahir also conducted a site-visit to the area allocated for the development of this project.

In addition to the Islamic Centre which is planned to be developed within the next 15 months, under the current administration, five new mosques are also underway in Addu City.
