The need for development in the local islands of the Maldives is readily apparent to residents and visitors who explore these islands from a non-tourist perspective. Development is required in various aspects, including infrastructure such as roads, housing, healthcare, and the education system. These areas often require closer attention and necessary improvements.

Although it is undeniable that the Maldivian government has made significant efforts over the past decade to address congestion issues in the Greater Male' Area through housing projects, there remains a need to focus on other essential aspects of development, especially in smaller islands.

In recent years, smaller islands in the Maldives have witnessed improvements, particularly with the rise of local tourism. This has allowed visitors to discover that the Maldives offers more than just resorts - empowering islanders to make positive transformations in their communities. With this, island residents and local councils have been actively working on upgrading and urbanizing their islands to foster independent development. Additionally, the government has shown its commitment to initiating significant changes by signing new development projects as well.

On June 4, 2023, the Maldivian Government entered into 10 agreements with the Government of India, marking a significant step towards implementing major development projects in the Maldives. These projects, categorized as 'High Impact Community Development Projects,' aim to bring about positive changes not only to the capital city but also to several local islands.

The development projects signed with the Government of India and the Maldvies include:

  • developing an outdoor gym in Addu City, G.Dh Atoll Vaadhoo as well as Ha. Dhihdhoo
  • Building a new council office in Lh. Hinnavaru
  • Development of the Arts Centre in Male’ City
  • Establishing a mental health unit in the G.Dh Thinadhoo Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital
  • Digitalization of the Laamu Atoll Education Center

The financing for these projects is supported by a line of credit worth USD 100 million, which was signed between the Maldives and India in January 2023. The development initiatives primarily target larger islands within the Maldives, focusing on transforming their infrastructure and fostering progress.
