In a statement released by the President’s Office on 15 June 2025, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu officially designated 30 August of each year as National Engineers’ Day, marking this date to commemorate the inauguration of the China–Maldives Friendship Bridge—the most significant infrastructure project in Maldivian history.
The Presidential Directive further appoints the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure as the coordinating body responsible for organizing and overseeing all commemorative events for National Engineers’ Day.
Since the inauguration of the China–Maldives Friendship Bridge, officially named the Sinamalé Bridge, on 30 August 2018, the Maldives has witnessed a remarkable transformation in connectivity and daily life.
Before its completion, travel between Malé, the international airport on Hulhulé, and the residential island Hulhumalé relied solely on ferries—often slow, weather-dependent, and costly. The bridge has dramatically cut travel time, now enabling seamless vehicular access and vastly improving convenience for commuters, tourists, and airport travellers.
Beyond its functional benefits, the Sinamalé Bridge stands as a potent symbol of China–Maldives friendship, resonating with both engineers and the public alike. By linking Malé, Hulhulé, and Hulhumalé, the bridge not only strengthens physical connectivity but also supports socio-economic integration within the capital region.
