In late 2024, the Government of the Maldives initiated a comprehensive review of the national health insurance scheme, Aasandha, as part of an effort to reassess its sustainability and optimize its benefits for citizens. This evaluation led to a pivotal decision by Aasandha Company to discontinue coverage for individuals who were already insured under private health insurance plans.
The rationale behind this policy shift was to curb excessive spending, as Aasandha consistently exceeded its allocated budget each year. However, the decision had significant unintended consequences. Many individuals who relied on both Aasandha and private insurance found themselves burdened with substantially higher medical costs, as private insurance alone often resulted in more expensive hospital fees. The policy change sparked widespread concern and distress among affected patients, many of whom struggled with the financial strain of increased healthcare expenses.
In response to public concerns and the challenges faced by insured patients, Aasandha Company has now decided to reverse its previous stance and reinstate dual insurance coverage. In an official statement published on X, the company announced that hospitals will resume providing dual insurance coverage for consultation fees starting from March 19, 2025. Furthermore, beginning March 27, 2025, outpatient services and other medical expenses will once again be eligible for coverage under both Aasandha and private insurance policies.
