As the much-awaited elections in the Maldives draw near, political parties are entering the final stages of preparation. The country has experienced significant political upheaval since 2022, from the arrest and sentencing of former President Abdulla Yameen to the emergence of a new political party, The Democrats, founded by the former leader of Maldives Democratic Party (MDP), Mohamed Nasheed. The anticipation surrounding the upcoming elections has left citizens eagerly awaiting the results, unsure which candidate will emerge victorious in this critical political race.

While many parties are readying themselves for the elections, some still face challenges that need to be addressed. The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) recently faced a setback when the Election Commission (EC) rejected their candidate. In response, the party has taken the matter to the Supreme Court for resolution. Meanwhile, other political parties are working diligently to ensure a smooth and issue-free electoral process.

The Democrats, for instance, have already chosen their candidate for the upcoming election. Contrary to expectations of Mohamed Nasheed running for the position, the party announced MP Ilyas Labeeb as their candidate.

The newly formed political party is entering the electoral race with great determination, as evidenced by Eva Abdulla's initiative to clear her police records in preparation for possible running mate position.  Meanwhile, their chosen candidate, MP Ilyas Labeeb, has wasted no time in voicing his vision for government reforms in the Maldives if elected.

Central to The Democrats' agenda is a proposal to transition from a presidential to a parliamentary system of government. The party aims to limit parliamentary membership to a maximum of 76 individuals. Of these, 55 members will be elected from the Male' region, and eight seats will be reserved for female representatives, while two will be allotted for disabled representatives from four different regions. Additionally, 11 seats will be distributed based on the parties' proportional votes in the elections.

"In a Democrat's government, we will offer the opportunity for people to express their opinions and take part in decision-making," stated MP Ilyas, the Presidential candidate for The Democrats.

As election day draws closer, the political landscape in the Maldives remains dynamic and unpredictable. Citizens are eager to witness how these political developments will shape the future direction of the nation. As parties compete for supremacy and present their visions for reform, voters will play a crucial role in determining the course of the country's governance.
