In addition to these demands, the opposition parties have also previously stated that they will be working on filing a no-confidence motion against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
The Presidents Office
The issue surrounding the Maldives and Mauritius appears to be never-ending following the decision that was made regarding the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Though it was quite evident that upon the announcement of the final decision that the Maldivian citizens would be unhappy regarding having to split the EEZ with Mauritius, matters have gotten worse as politics and Government officials have gotten involved in a back-and-forth argument regarding this matter.
Following the decision, it appeared as if the Maldives fell into political turmoil as accusations were made against the Maldivian Government, especially the President himself, of mismanagement and secrecy surrounding the final decisions that were made. The accusations regarding the President of the Maldives came heavily due to the public becoming aware of a letter that was written by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih which was addressed to the Prime Minister of Mauritius, supporting their claim of the Chagos Islands.
This letter not only became controversial, but many deemed this as proof that the Government heavily mismanaged this case as the Maldives was not known to side with Mauritius on its claim over the Chagos Islands.
Following this news becoming public, the opposing parties as well as the general public have made it very clear that everyone wanted to know the contents of the letter which was addressed to the Prime Minister of Mauritus. However, even after a local news media filed for the contents of the letter to be publicised under the Right to Information Act, the request was denied by the President’s Office as such exchanges between countries are not commonly publicized, according to the President's Office.
It appears though that the issue surrounding this letter has still not been resolved as demands are being made by opposition parties to the President’s Office to publicize the contents of the letter. In addition to these demands, the opposition parties have also previously stated that they will be working on filing a no-confidence motion against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
In response to these demands, the President’s Office has now stated that the contents of the letter can only be revealed if a request is formally made by the Parliamentary Security Committee (241 committee).
"The President's letter to the Prime Minister of Mauritius will be shared with the 241 committee if requested. These are not things done in secrecy. The documents submitted by Maldives are available on the ITLOS' website as well. The Attorney General's Office is also making efforts through social media to make people aware of the work that has been done. Those works will be visible as well.” - President's Office, Spokesperson Mohamed Miuvaan.
