Justice failed: Former tourism minister returns to Maldives as a free man

Ali Waheed was not only accused of sexually harassing multiple of his employees but he was also sentenced to 2 months and 12 days by the Supreme Court of the Maldives, for failing to show up to court hearings on 11 August 2021.

There might not be many popular cases of sexual misconduct in the Maldives, but one case that caught the interest of many took place in 2021. One of the reasons that this case took the interest of many is due to the status of the person who was accused. The case revolved around the former Tourism Minister Ali Waheed, as several of his employees filed cases of sexual harassment against their Minister at the time.

With the power imbalance and the clear political power as well as the position that he held, the case became major news in the Maldives, and Ali Waheed was brought to court. But like many such cases around the world, and even in the Maldives, Ali Waheed fled the country and now the case has been dropped as the Prosecutor General’s Office has stated that following the victims and witnesses of the case requesting not to further proceed with the case, the office has decided to drop the case against Ali Waheed.

Following this, Ali Waheed made his return to the Maldives from the UK, and as there was no case against him, he was not arrested upon arrival. This is one of the many occasions that took place in the Maldives that shows exactly how much power and authority can help you get away with things.

Ali Waheed was not only accused of sexually harassing multiple of his employees but he was also sentenced to 2 months and 12 days by the Supreme Court of the Maldives, for failing to show up to his court hearings on August 11, 2021,

Even with all this, Ali Waheed has managed to make his return to the country a free man. According to local news media, an official from the Supreme Court of the Maldives stated that the Court dropped their charges of 2 months and 12 days as Ali Waheed has made a formal apology to the court for his behaviour.
