The lead-up to a Presidential election is often characterized by extensive travel, events, and gatherings, marking a period of heightened expenditure for political parties. In a recent development, the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) has found itself facing financial challenges, with the national carrier Maldivian threatening legal action over unpaid bills totalling MVR 5.6 million for campaign-related trips. Island Aviation, the company managing the airline, has issued a notice to MDP, setting a deadline of February 18, 2024, for settling the outstanding amount.

At that time, the company had already given notice that failure to do so would prompt legal proceedings against the political party. And now, after the notice period ended, it appears that MDP has failed to clear their pending, leading to Island Aviation Services initiating the legal proceedings against MDP.

We filed a case in Civil Court yesterday because MDP did not pay for the second round of campaign trips with Maldivian Airlines

Several attempts were made by IAS in order to give MDP ample time to secure payments in order to settle the pending, however, even after multiple reminders and extended deadlines, the party has allegedly failed to meet the campaign-related travel expenses leading to IAS starting the process of taking legal action.

MDP requested that we provide clarification on some matters. We have obliged and given them another deadline, but they have failed to meet that too with their payments
