The campaign months leading up to the
Presidential election can be a lot of things, but one thing that is surely
expensive. With the number of trips, gatherings and events that are hosted by
different political parties, by the end of the campaign period, some of the
political parties find themselves in quite a predicament when the expenditure
bill of the election period comes out.
Recently, the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP)
has found themselves in this situation, as the national carrier Maldivian is
set to sue the political party if their bills are not settled. According to
Maldivian, MDP has wrecked up a MVR 5.6 million bill on trips taken during the
election period which has not been settled to this day, and the company
managing the airline Island Aviation is taking the needed measures by giving
notice to MDP to settle the bill or settle the matter in court.
The notice given by Island Aviation gives MDP
until the 18th of February 2024 to settle the MVR 5.6 million, and if the
amount is not settled within this period the company is set to take the
political party to court in order to resolve the matter. This, however, is not
the first time a political party in the Maldives finds themselves in a
situation where they are unable to settle the major airline bills they have
wrecked.
During a previous campaign year, the Dhivehi
Rayyithunge Party (DRP) was also brought to court as the party failed to settle
the money they owed to Island Aviation.
