Following the Presidential election held on September 30, 2023, the political landscape in the Maldives is undergoing a significant shift as Dr Mohamed Muizzu, the candidate from the opposing party, emerged victorious with 53.78 percent of the votes.
In the wake of this electoral triumph, fervent supporters of the coalition between the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) gathered to celebrate President-elect Dr. Muizzu at the party headquarters. As anticipated, amidst the jubilation, these supporters also fervently called for the release of former President Abdulla Yameen, who had been sentenced to an 11-year jail term on charges of corruption and money laundering.
Dr. Mohamed Jameel, a prominent advocate and one of the lead lawyers working on Yameen’s ongoing trial addressed the local media during this gathering, asserting that the election's outcome was a testament to the people's hard work and that it highlighted the political nature of Yameen's sentencing under the current administration, led by the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP).
Furthermore, Dr Mohamed Jameel urged the Prosecutor General's Office to release Yameen unconditionally within the next 24 hours. While many had expected this move to happen sooner or later if Dr Muizzu were to be elected, breaking news later in the evening confirmed that the former President was indeed being transferred from Maafushi jail, where he had been detained, back to his residence in Male' City. Notably, President-elect Dr. Muizzu himself was present at the former President's residence to extend a warm welcome upon his return.
