In the Maldives, the excitement for new resorts and islands never stops. The sights, pristine waters, and lush greenery never cease to astound visitors and locals alike.

While most luxury resorts are reserved and priced for tourists, there are some for locals too. For anyone who grew up in the greater Male' area, Kuda Bandos island was undoubtedly one of the most famous locations for families to go on picnics. This picnic resort concept was both close to  capital city Male' and incredibly cheap to people. However, Kuda Bandos was soon taken up and converted into a resort, necessitating the need for a similar picnic island local residents in Male'.

And after several years, the new picnic island 'Kudagiri' was formed. The planning and execution of this island began in 2021, with the goal of having the final touches completed and the island open to guests by July 26th, 2022. However, July has passed and the island is still not ready for visitors since some finishing touches are still needed.

The Hulhumale' Development Corporation (HDC) has declared openings for businesses to set up shop on the island in order to finally open up this magnificent island. With services such as ferry services as well as cafe’s and souvenir stores being extremely important for a picnic island such as Kudagiri, HDC has made an announcement for interested parties to apply for this opportunity to set up shop in this new and upcoming picnic island.

While there have been mixed reactions to the inauguration of this picnic island, it is certain to be something locals will enjoy on weekends. With the islands around the greater Male' area being exceedingly inaccessible for locals due to their high pricing, a picnic island that caters to both locals  and tourists will be something interesting for Maldivians.
