Dr. Ahmed Inaz, former Minister of Finance (April 2011 – December 2011) has been appointed the Chairperson of the Board of Maldives Pension Administration Office (MPAO) on 20 June 2022.
Inaz served as the Minister of Finance from April to December 2011, and played a key role in the introduction of the tax system in the Maldives. Prior to becoming the Minister, he worked as a State Minister and also Deputy Minister of Ministry of Economic Development and Trade.
Under the Maldives Pension Act, The MPAO is administered through an eight member board, comprising of a Chairperson, senior official from the securities market regulator (CMDA), senior civil servant of the Ministry of Finance, A senior Civil Servant from the ministry responsible for social security; and four members from the private sector.
As per the Pension Act, the President appoints the members of the Board of the Pension Office.
The Chairperson of the Board and the four members appointed from the private sector are appointed from a list of candidates identified by a Selection Committee formed jointly by the Civil Service Commission, Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry responsible for social security.
The Selection Committee then proposes no less than three candidates for the vacant posts. All administrative arrangements regarding the appointment of members selected by the Selection Committee for the posts are carried out by the Pension Office.
Prior to submission of the candidates to the President for the appointment of Board of the Pension Office, the names of candidates selected by government offices and the Selection Committee are also submitted to the CMDA to verify if they fulfil the requirements of a member.
No candidate selected by the Selection Committee shall be a family member (spouse, parent, child, or sibling) of any member of the Selection Committee or a member of the Board of the Pension Office, or a person holding a ministerial post or higher rank.
