In recent years, the Maldives has witnessed the announcement and successful completion of major housing projects, providing a ray of hope for citizens seeking affordable and comfortable homes. Notably, during the presidency of Yameen Abdul Qayoom, significant strides were made in housing development, with projects like the Hiya social housing project taking centre stage in the government's efforts to address housing needs. As a result, housing projects have become an integral part of presidential promises during elections.

While the government's commitment to housing development is commendable, it is not uncommon to encounter complaints from residents after they have moved into their newly allocated flats. Despite the efforts made by Urbanco, the agency responsible for maintaining these housing units, certain projects, like the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) flats, have encountered major issues that necessitate immediate attention and repairs. Residents of these flats have voiced concerns about persistent water leakage problems, especially during rainy days, which is seeping through balconies and causing inconvenience and damage.

Furthermore, the flats have encountered drainage system problems, exacerbating the issue of balcony leakage. The inadequate ventilation system in the apartments has also been a cause for concern, particularly with kitchen hoods leaking food odours into neighbouring apartments, leading to tensions among residents.

In response to these complaints, MACL has taken the initiative to inform the contractors responsible for the construction of the flats about the prevailing issues, urging them to address and rectify the problems promptly. The company is keen to resolve these issues to ensure the comfort and well-being of the residents.
