Over the years, Hulhumale’ has been synonymous with development and progress. With several development projects such as the housing initiatives underway, Hulhumale’ has become the ideal spot for locals and visitors alike as it is linked to the airport as well as the capital city of Male’ by the Sinamale’ bridge, making it a main hub of connectivity when it comes to the Greater Male' Area.

However, the most tempting of all reasons to move to Hulhumale' is because this city has all the benefits of living in a capital city without feeling like an overcrowded urban centre, at least compared to Male'. But even with all these benefits, one of the things that differentiate Hulhumale’ from the rest of the country is that Hulhumale’ is the first city to emerge as a smart city in the Maldives.

The smart City initiative

The first step taken towards the smart city initiative was the introduction of smart-con. With the goal of helping HDC achieve its vision of becoming a leader in re-defining quality living through technology and innovation, smart-con aims to turn Hulhumale’ into a digitally powered city where there will be no traffic and for the city to be up to date with the fast-growing global economy.

Under this initiative, there are several targets that HDC aims to reach such as making Hulhumale’ the first city to have a FIBRE OPTIC GPON network, replacing the traditional cables used for the ICT services as well as carrying out the transport masterplan which will help avoid traffic and road congestion in the city.

And on November 28, HDC officially announced their plans to carry out parts of the transport masterplan by drawing separate lanes for bikes, buses and four-wheelers which will in turn help implement proper traffic control measures in the city. While the roads of Male’ maybe too narrow for such measures to ever be implemented, this feels like a first step towards figuring out traffic control and road congestion issues which have become an increasing problem in cities of the Maldives.

Partnership with Huawei Sri Lanka

With the solution for road congestion underway, HDC has taken yet another step towards making the smart city project a success as the company has partnered with Huawei Lanka to provide its expertise in the Information Communication Technology (ICT) field. The company will also assist HDC with the design, implementation, and deployment of smart city solutions.

The smart-city project is one of the many exciting new projects being carried out by HDC in order to develop Hulhumale’ into the next international hub of the Maldives. This year, HDC also announced their Urban isle project which aims to introduce urban tourism to the Maldives by developing an area in Hulhumale’ to cater to the growing tourism industry of the Maldives.
