The Government is moving ahead with its plans to develop new hospitals in the Maldives to ensure accessible and affordable healthcare in the Maldives. One of the biggest issues that citizens continue to face in the health sector remains the inaccessibility due to the tertiary hospitals being located too far away from the islands. Due to this reason, people tend to spend large sums of money and travel long distances to get better healthcare in Male’ City.
To resolve this issue, the Maldivian Government has now rewarded projects valued at a total of MVR 627 million to different State Owned Companies (SEOs). Upon the completion of these projects, islands across the Maldives will see the development of new hospitals as well as health centre buildings. The contracts for development in the first four islands, consisting of Noonu Atoll Foddoo, Shaviyani Atoll Maaungoodhoo, Vaavu Atoll Felidhoo, and Thaa Atoll Vilufushi were awarded to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). Two of the islands, Felidhoo and Vilufushi will see the development of hospitals, while Foddoo and Haaungoodhoo will see Health Centres being developed.
Road Development Corporation (RDC) was also contracted to develop projects in four islands. RDC will develop Hospitals in Haa Dhaalu Hanimaadhoo, and Alifu Dhaalu Maamigili in addition to the development of a Health Centre in Kaafu Atoll Baarah and the construction of a Damanaveshi facility in Haa Dhaalu atoll Kulhudhuffushi.
Lastly, the Government awarded the development of a Health Centre in Haa Dhaalu Atoll Makunudhoo. Upon the completion of these developmental projects, nine different islands in the Maldives will see further developments in its health sector in the form of better accessibility.
