On 20 May 2025, the Ministry of Health of the Maldives signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health. The signing, which took place during the 78th World Health Assembly hosted in Geneva is set to strengthen cooperation in public health.

In a statement published by the Ministry of Health, it was revealed that the MoU was signed in order to strengthen cooperation in public health in the Maldives.

  • Strengthening primary healthcare services in the Maldives
  • Strengthening the regulatory service of the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA).
  • Strengthening human resources in the health sector
  • Strengthening health policy, health system research and health information and technology
  • Support for innovative sustainable financing for health sector growth

The MoU was signed by State Minister of Health Hadija Abdul Samad Abdullah on behalf of the Maldives and Deputy Minister of Public Health Dash-is Kawthon on behalf of Thailand. The ceremony was attended by Maldives’ Health Minister Abdullah Nazim Ibrahim and WHO Regional Director for Southeast Asia Saima Wazid.

In recent years, the Maldives’ government has been forming close ties with Thailand, especially in terms of the health sector. Prior to the signing of the MoU, the Maldives government and hospitals in Thailand have also signed agreements to expand the coverage of the national health insurance scheme, Aasandha, to Thailand – enabling Maldivians to access treatment in select facilities in the country.

While work is currently in progress to expand Aasandha coverage to Thailand, the MoU signed  with Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health will further boost the Maldives’ health sector.
