The Maldives Government has announced a significant milestone in its efforts to elevate the national health insurance scheme, Aasandha, to a global level. Known for its critical role in providing affordable healthcare options, Aasandha has primarily focused on services within the Maldives and neighbouring countries such as India and Sri Lanka. However, in response to the growing demand for access to advanced medical technology and specialized treatments, the government has extended Aasandha coverage to hospitals in Bangkok, Thailand, and Dubai, UAE.
This expansion comes after months of negotiations and planning. On December 10, 2024, Aasandha Company Limited announced the official signing of agreements with three prestigious hospitals. These include Burjeel Medical City (BMC) in Dubai, as well as World Medical Hospital and Bangkok Hospital in Thailand.
The new coverage will take effect starting January 15, 2025, marking a new chapter in the history of Aasandha. Maldivians seeking treatment abroad for conditions that cannot be adequately addressed locally will now have the option to access these advanced facilities. Aasandha Company has assured the public that all necessary arrangements are in place to ensure a seamless transition to this expanded coverage.
The decision to partner with hospitals in Bangkok and Dubai was driven by both demand and strategic considerations. Bangkok has long been a hub for medical tourism in Asia, attracting patients from around the globe with its high-quality yet affordable healthcare services. Dubai, on the other hand, offers access to some of the most advanced healthcare technologies and specialized care available in the region.
Until now, India and Sri Lanka have been the primary countries offering Aasandha coverage abroad. While these countries provide excellent care, the inclusion of Bangkok and Dubai adds diversity and allows patients to choose facilities based on their specific medical needs.
