The Maldivian transportation industry appears to be broadening lately with the introduction of buses from Male’ to Hulhumale’ and phase two, and the recent introduction of minibus services within Male’, Laamu Atoll, Addu and Fuvahmulah city.

However, these are not the only developments in the transportation sector; on August 12, 2022, the Ministry of Transportation and Civil Aviation announced that Malaysia and the Maldives had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to mutually recognize domestic driver's licenses issued by both nations.

Maldivians are delighted by this new development because Malaysia is one of the nations where they frequently relocate permanently for work, study, or medical care. It goes without saying that this MoU would make life easier for the thousands of Maldivians who visit or relocate to Malaysia each year because it will allow drivers with licenses from both countries to operate motor vehicles in the other country with the licenses given by the respective governments.

Due to its proximity to the Maldives, Malaysia is another popular destination for Maldivians. In recent years, Maldivian airlines have begun offering flights to Kuala Lumpur during major holidays like Eid, making Malaysia a popular travel destination for the nation.

As for Malaysians traveling to the Maldives, there is doubt whether this will increase the number of Malaysians travelling to the Maldives.

The two nations have officially signed the agreement, and it will come into effect on September 12, 2022. This gives Maldivian residents who live in Malaysia enough time to get a valid driver's license that is accepted in both Malaysia and the Maldives, and of course, the same is true for Malaysian nationals living in the Maldives.
