New Currency notes with Rufiya symbol

While previous notes simply have the value written out fully in Dhivehi, in this newly unveiled MVR 50 note the Rufiya symbol is put next to the value in order to introduce this change in the Maldivian currency notes.

Earlier this year on July 2022, the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) introduced a symbol representing the Maldivian Rufiya. The symbol was chosen after a contest was opened to the public to submit their artwork and explanation for the best symbol. The winner of this contest was Hassan Shujau with his submission of a symbol created based around the Dhivehi Thaana ރ, which had been used as the Maldivian equivalent of MVR.

However, even with the introduction of the symbol, its usage of it is still rare as the Maldivian currency remains to adjust to this new change and the people of the country are still not used to writing or using the new symbol that has been introduced.

Soon after the unveiling of this symbol, digital artists also began working on introducing it digitally in Dhivehi fonts. While work is still underway in familiarising everyone with this new change, one of the more significant steps towards accepting this symbol for Rufiya has been taken by MMA recently.

On November 14, 2022, MMA unveiled the MVR 50 note with the Maldivian Rufiya symbol for the first time. While previous notes have the value written out fully in Dhivehi, in this newly unveiled MVR 50 note the simple symbol is put next to the value in order to introduce this change into the Maldivian currency notes.

While it is not yet known when these currency notes will be available to the public, this, however, is a major step towards asserting the usage of the proper symbol when writing Rufiya.
