The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has decided to increase the weekly amount of US dollars issued to banks by 51 percent to facilitate access to foreign exchange through the banking system and provide further relief to the foreign exchange market.
The 51 percent increase from this week to the next three weeks is a move to further facilitate access to foreign exchange through the banking system and address the difficulties faced by businesses in obtaining funds for importing goods.
MMA stated that the authority has been taking important measures to ease the pressure on the foreign exchange market following the decline in dollar inflows to the Maldives since February 2026. The decline in dollar inflows was due to the slowdown in the tourism industry due to the unrest in the Middle East.
MMA stated that the authority has already done a lot to solve the foreign exchange shortage. The government increased the amount of dollars issued to banks by 32 percent to help traders importing essential food items during the month of Ramadan.
In addition, the weekly dollar amount was increased by 26 percent in June to provide additional assistance to businesses during the tourism off-season.
