Local council staff also get a raise amid election

Starting from October 1, 2023, a new salary adjustment will come into effect, benefiting local councils with increased compensation.

The Government of the Maldives, under the current administration, has launched a significant effort to increase the salaries of civil servants, with a focus on government office workers. This initiative was initiated in 2022 and is being rolled out in several phases.

The first phase of the program began with the education sector, where teachers and educators saw an increase in their salaries. This move acknowledges the crucial role played by educators in shaping the future of the nation.

Following the success in the education sector, the program was extended to the healthcare sector. Healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and support staff, also experienced salary improvements, highlighting the government's commitment to the well-being of its citizens.

Looking ahead, the current administration has made a significant commitment to raise civil service workers' salaries by 40 percent in the coming year. Additionally, the government also aims to extend these benefits to local council workers by introducing a 35 percent allowance in their salaries.

Even prior to this, a 35 percent allowance is already included in the salaries of civil servant workers, however, as this did not extend to local council workers, the Solih administration has now decided to make this inclusion just few days before the second round of the presidential election.

Starting from October 1, 2023, a new salary adjustment will come into effect, benefiting local councils with increased compensation.
